Sustainability
OUR FOCUS AREAS
Every day Norway puts more than 36 million seafood meals on the global dinner table. As one of Norway’s largest seafood groups, sustainability is also one of Nergård’s most important tasks.
Catches from the best managed fish stocks
Many of the world’s fish stocks are under major threat due to overfishing and pollution. The sea along the coast of Northern Norway and the Barents Sea, where we catch our raw material, is clean and rich in nutrients. In this precise area, we find some the world’s largest and best managed stocks of groundfish and pelagic species.
Conservation of fish resources
We are highly aware of our responsibility to help conserve these areas so that future generations can also benefit from these resources.
- We have introduced measures to ensure our fleet leaves no marine litter.
- Our new vessels, which will enter service in 2020, are being built to minimise emissions.
- We have two MSC-certified processing plants.
- Nergård was the first major shipowner in Norway to join the international project ‘’Fishing for Litter’’, which aims to reduce the growing volumes of marine litter.

Good living conditions for those who live by the industry
At Nergård we are constantly aware of ensuring that the people who live by the industry have good living conditions.
Many of our employees live in more isolated rural areas and we see that, in many ways, they are given less priority. In order to run our business, we are reliant on the local communities being socially sustainable. Consequently, we are committed to sponsoring grassroots sports and other activities for children and young people and contributing to ensuring the local communities have the facilities they need to make it attractive to live there.
More women on board
Nergård Havfiske is working actively to get more women on board. Fishing is traditionally a very male-dominated profession. However, we have gradually managed to attract more female employees. This is extremely good for the group, and we hope to attract even more women in the years to come.
Health, safety and the environment
Health, safety and the environment are the prioritised focus areas in our daily operations, at our processing plants onshore and on our fishing fleet.
